BIOLOGY: Food web project
All students will illustrate a food web that could exist within a single ecosystem (the intersection of the habitats of many animals) of their choosing.
REQUIREMENTS:
- You will make a brightly colored poster board (regular size)
- The poster must be clearly and neatly labeled with the name of the ECOSYSTEM illustrated by the food web.
- Poster must contain pictures of … (This is the minimum requirement.)
o The sun
o 3 producers
o 3 primary consumers
o 2 secondary consumers
o 2 tertiary consumers
o 3 scavengers
o and 3 decomposers
- Each organism must be identified on the poster by name and classification as a producer, herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, scavenger, or decomposer. Of course, some organisms will be of more than one type (i.e. both scavenger and omnivore).
- Draw arrows connecting the plants and animals to show feeding relationships.
- Be sure your arrows are pointing in the direction that the energy flows.
IDEAS: Look for pictures in old issues of nature type magazines (ex. National Geographic, Field and Stream, Outdoor Life) or you can print out photos found on the internet. Color is required but you may have them printed at Kinkos, Wal-mart (if you save them as a jpeg file), etc.
ADDITIONAL HONORS REQUIREMENTS:
1. Give the scientific name (Genus species) for each organism within your ecosystem
2. Scientific names must be in italics with the Genus capitalized and the species lower case
3. You will WRITE FIVE PARAGRAPHS on CONSUMERS/DECOMPOSERS/SCAVENGERS. They are to be written on the eating habits of five different consumers, scavengers, or decomposers that you listed (one animal --or other organism-- per paragraph)– including when they feed, how they find prey, etc.
4. Write ONE PARAGRAPH on the optimum growth conditions for one of your PRODUCERS.
